How Internal Auditors in Financial Services Can Make the Most of the Summer

Posted on 21 July 2026

Every year, the internal audit recruitment market follows a broadly predictable pattern. Activity builds through the first quarter, peaks in spring, and then, as June arrives and minds turn to holidays hiring slows. Hiring managers are harder to reach. On the surface, summer looks like the wrong time to be thinking about your career.

It isn't. In thirty years of placing internal auditors in financial services, I have come to see summer as one of the most valuable periods in the recruitment calendar, not despite the slowdown, but because of it. Here is how to use it.

Why summer is better than you think for job searching

When most candidates go quiet, the ones who remain active stand out. Hiring managers who are unreachable in the pressure of Q1 are often more willing to have an informal conversation in July. Decision-making timelines lengthen, but the groundwork for autumn appointments is laid now.

Have the conversation before the rush

The single most useful thing a candidate can do in summer is talk to a specialist recruiter, not to apply for a specific role, but to have an honest conversation about the market, their positioning, and what opportunities are likely to emerge.

At Hybridge, some of our most successful placements have started as summer conversations that went nowhere immediately, but where we understood exactly what the candidate was looking for and could move quickly when the right role emerged. That kind of relationship takes time to build. Starting it in September, when everyone else is also calling, is not the same as starting it in July.

If you have been meaning to get in touch, now is the right time.

Use the time to strengthen your position

There are things candidates always mean to do but rarely find time for when they are busy in role. Summer is the time to do them.

Your CV — When did you last update it properly? Not just adding your current role, but reviewing it critically. Does it reflect achievements or just responsibilities? Does it tell a clear career story? A well-structured CV that articulates impact rather than activity makes a significant difference at senior level.

Your LinkedIn profile — Is it consistent with your CV? Does your headline reflect what you actually do and what you are looking for? Have you got recommendations from colleagues or clients? A strong LinkedIn presence is increasingly how candidates are found, including by Hybridge.

Your market knowledge — Do you know what your skills and experience are worth in the current market? Prepare for the autumn surge

The internal audit recruitment market in financial services tends to accelerate sharply in September. Firms return from summer with hiring decisions to make, budgets to deploy before year end, and roles that have been held open through the summer now actively briefed.

The candidates who move quickly into the best roles in autumn are those who did the preparation in summer. They know what they want, their CV is ready, they have had the conversation with their recruiter, and when a role emerges that fits, they can move at pace. Candidates who are still updating their CV in September while trying to manage a demanding day job are already at a disadvantage.

The market heading into Q3 and Q4 looks active. Global uncertainty has created a temporary pause in hiring activity, but the underlying demand for strong internal audit talent in financial services remains intact. When that demand releases — and it will — it tends to move quickly.

In summary

Summer is not the time to switch off from your career. It is the time to do the things you cannot do when the market is moving at full speed. Have the conversations, do the preparation, and position yourself to move decisively when autumn arrives.
